MIPTV: A new Dutch format in which deaf people are giventhe chance to hear again has been picked up for international distribution byLondon-based distributor DRG.

Out of the Silence was created but Dutch companies Tuvalu Media and FormatKitchen and has already been commissioned by an as-yet unnamed broadcaster in the Netherlands. The programme takes deaf people who are suitable for implant surgery and follows their journey through to being able to hear.

Andrea Jackson, MD of acquisitions and formats at DRG, said the wish fulfilment element of the programme makes it a format that can travel to any territory.

“There’s a component to this beyond what could be documentary television. Some of the characters will be hearing for the first time ever in their lives and we capture that moment. But there is a sound that each of them has always wanted to hear, and the format provides that moment for them,” she said.

The show works closely with the clinic that provides the treatment to find suitable candidates for surgery and the programme.
